01 What Ledger Live Desktop does

Think of Ledger Live Desktop as a clear window into the accounts you manage with your hardware wallet. It brings account views and supported asset tools together in one place, while your Ledger device is used to review and approve sensitive actions.

From the desktop app, you can add accounts, check balances and transaction history, and explore supported features such as installing blockchain apps on your device. Availability can vary by asset, region, and device model. The app is a management interface—not a substitute for your hardware wallet, and not a place to store or type your Secret Recovery Phrase.

That distinction matters: information displayed on a computer can help you understand what is happening, but transaction approval should be checked carefully on your Ledger device. Treat the device screen as the final source of truth before confirming an action.

02 Starting up your device

Begin by downloading Ledger Live from Ledger’s official website. Check the web address yourself rather than following an unexpected message or sponsored download link. Once installed, open the app and follow its on-screen setup guidance to select or connect your device.

Connect your Ledger using a reliable cable, unlock it with your PIN, and follow the prompts shown both in the app and on the device. If you are setting up a new wallet, initialize it on the device and write the recovery phrase on the supplied recovery sheets. Keep those words private and offline; Ledger Support will never need them.

After setup, use the app’s authenticity and device checks when prompted. You can then add the accounts you want to monitor and synchronize their activity. A first synchronization may take a little time. If the device is not detected, try another USB port or cable, close software that may be competing for the connection, and restart the app before repeating the official setup steps.

Take a moment to learn the layout before making changes. Account balances, network fees, and pending transactions are different kinds of information, and a displayed balance is not a guarantee of a future price or confirmation. Start with a small, familiar action if you are learning a new feature, and consult the relevant official help article whenever a prompt is unexpected. Keeping the process calm and methodical is often the most useful first step.

03 Small habits, stronger security

Good wallet security is a routine, not a single setting. Keep Ledger Live and your computer’s operating system updated. Use only the genuine desktop application, protect your computer with a screen lock, and avoid managing assets over a device you do not trust. Download updates through trusted official channels rather than links sent through unsolicited email, direct messages, or pop-up warnings.

Read transaction details on the hardware wallet itself—especially the recipient, network, and amount. Do not approve anything you did not initiate. Anyone who asks for your recovery phrase, asks you to enter it into a website, or promises to “validate” your wallet is a risk, not a support channel. Ledger cannot recover a phrase that has been exposed; if it is compromised, consult official Ledger guidance promptly.
